Disaster can strike at any time. It can be natural or manmade.
Common sense would dictate preparation.
Thru preparation comes peace of mind!
The Earthquake in Haiti exemplifies the importance of being prepared. Most disasters will follow the same sequence of progression. Trapped neighbors will need rescued first, then the injured will need to be treated. You will then need to prepare your shelter and gather your family and provisions. Finally, protect your family from danger as much as possible. Does your plan include the equipment and provisions needed to do this?
Don't assume help will be there when you need it. The hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 proved that the federal governmanet can easily become overwhelmed. Their goal is to take care of the big picture, which can leave some families on their own for the first days and weeks of the relief response.
Some communities advocate the use of neighborhood teams such as CERT to assist with disasters. As an Airborne Ranger I was taught the benefits of teamwork, and fully agree with their uselfullness. I was also taught to be prepared should I have to operate without the team. Police, Fire, and National Guard will be activated, public utilities, water, sewer, electric, will be called to service. Vacations, out of town trips , or just being on the other end of town may keep team members from being available. Injury or death during the event, or team members that evacuated and are unable to return would also hinder the team. By becoming prepared as an individual, or family unit, you can operate with or without your neighbrohood team, as the situation dicates.
The Well Prepared Citizen is the book that will assist you in making the necessary plans to help insure the wellfare and wellbeing of your family and loved ones during these times. There are also topic specific CD's for Tsunami and Hurricane preparations.
Think about this:
Is your bug-out-bag ready to go at a moments notice? Toiletries, change of clothes, medicines, food, water, etc.
If the government imposes a quaratine for the bird flu, H1N1, or any other reason, does your plan allow you food, water, and communications appropriate to get you thru?
If a natural disaster or a terrorist attack were to cause an industrial accident which releases a toxic plume, evacuation may not be possible. What is your plan for this situation?
Will your medical kit take care of your family? Most store bought kits will not come close to providing the care your family deserves.
Do you have proper equipment? The majority of the 72 hour kits may help you survive, but when was the last disaster taken care of in 72 hours.
Do you have a plan for evacuation, and does it include contacts and communications?
If your family is separated prior to evacuation, what is your plan to communicate your locaton.
The Well Prepared Citizen is the book that will answer these questions and many more! Topic specific CD's are also available for Tsunami and Hurricane Preparations.
